I am in urgent need me some new tyres on my float. Im just wondering if anyone can give me some info, where have you got yours from, how much should i be paying. Maybe someone has some good second hand tyres available (185/14).
Your help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Hiya Melissa....

I just went through this on my float!

I got 4 brand spanky new light truck tyres which were expensive.. like $120 each!!! *faints* however I shouldn't need new ones for 10 years as they will be balanced regularly and swapped.

We looked into getting second hands but the place in Lonsdale didn't have the size we needed, however if they did they would be around the $50ish mark.

I can ask our local mechanic who did the work on our float re the tyres as he is also a tyre man, he often has second hands laying around, but may only have one or two!

Go for light truck tyres - got mine from Bob Jane and the guy that owns the store explained that the walls on light truck tyres are stronger and are better suited to the fact that horses move in the float (something like that). We got ours about 12yrs ago and they are just getting to the point of having to be replaced, so while they may seem expensive compared to some of the cheaper tyres around, just think about the consequences if you have a cheap tyre blow out with a couple of horses in the float - We recently got new light trucks on my husbands ute and I think it was about $500-00 for 4, but that included a wheel alignment and the nitro.

I was quoted $128 per tyre when I enquired about Light Truck tyres, so sounds about right.

I expected them to be a lot more as I pay $185 each for my car tyres.

HA! $120 a tyre...I wish that's all I paid for tyres....damn performance tyres....damn 4WD tyres....lol

Agree...no re-treads! Light Truck tyres would be the best. If you've got RAA membership try Beaurepairs - they do a discount on tyres. Phone around & see who will get you the best price.

Also most older style holden rims fit on so you could be lucky enough to pick up some rims from a wrecker maybe, get some tyres put on. Looks a whole lot better than stockies, or dodgy hub caps that come off.
