PostSubject: EEEEK - My fish tank has an itty bitty leak   Tue Oct 11, 2011 10:55 am

I have a half hexagonal fish tank in the corner of my kitchen - which i cleaned out on the weekend - and I now notice one of the front "seams" - or join - whatever has a small leak - really small - but I want to act now before poor Fred and Wilma get their premises reduced from penthourse to a bedsit!
Can you use silicone in the inside - would that be toxic to the fish - What do the manufacturers do to seal the corner in the first place Question

If anyone knows -= please feel free to share - if not - of course i will consult a professional! - quite fond of my fishies.

(goes to show you - I should not have "CLEANED" - the dirt was probably holding it all together)

get the glass silicone from any hardware, we used to let them cure for a week before introducing fish back into the tank. For best results you should "strip" it right back to bare glass, but if it's only tiny, you may get away with just adding some to it. Have a good look at the silicone around it, see if there's an air bubble forming inbetween the join, if you can, try to take a pic of it, I'll let you know if it needs repairing or just patching. We used to own & run atlantis aquariums in Adelaide, so have fixed one or two tanks!

Okeydokey - it is little - as a lump of bluetack has stopped it at the minute. I have camera on charge at the moment - so will attempt to take a picture too!!

OK, can't see it too well, but, being that it's only a little tank, patching it will work fine.
To patch, empty, clean, & dry, finish final clean along where your going to patch with metho, I would silicone all the way, top to bottom, and let it cure for a week.
If your unsure if you've got the right silicone, have a squiz on the back, ones suitable will state that it's ok for aquariums. Just run a bead along the seam, & smooth off with your finger (use some gloves if you want)
