PostSubject: GOOD HOME FOUND - THANK YOU TO EVERYONE Long term, loving home wanted for lovely Quarterhorse gelding   Fri Mar 25, 2011 6:00 pm

Posting this for a friend ...

Dark buckskin (grulla) 15.1 hh, solid built purebred quarterhorse gelding.

He is a lovely, gentle, quiet boy, excellent for trail riding, good in the paddock with all horses, a good doer, goes barefoot. lovely boy to have around ...

But he has damaged his hamstring in a hindleg so walks short on one hind leg - like a limp. Has been attended to - there is no remedy. He can be ridden gently - he seems to have a limp - best for trail riding over good ground. Not for arena work.

His owner has had him for 8 years and doesn't want to part with him, but she has lost her job and is not having much luck finding employment and simply cannot keep him. She gave him to a couple at Murray Bridge as a companion horse and they promised a long term home, but have now decided they want something they can ride a lot and so are handing him back.

She is desperate, because she cannot keep him and does not want to have him put down.

Can anyone help, please?

I can't load a photo here - it doesn't like the format or something - but can email one if anyone is interested. He is a lovely boy ...

He is currently at Murray Bridge. He floats like a dream - in fact, he has excellent manners all round. If he is overfed he can get a bit full of himself, but still nothing nasty or naughty. He is a genuine quiet, gentle horse. But even though he's only 15.1 hh, he is a big boy - a pure old type of quarterhorse, lots of muscle, so he looks bigger than, say, a 15.1 hh thoroughbred.

He does not need ongoing vet care. If he were mine, I'd get the chiro down, say, three monthly, just because working on that leg places stress on the rest of his body, which is why he can't do heavy work - an occasional ride, and a long trail ride, would be best - nice straight lines at a steady pace.

The hamstring muscle was torn almost 18 months ago now - probably an accident in the paddock; no one knows exactly what happened. The muscle then dies - atrophies - and stops working, so when the horse steps forward his step is shorter than on his other legs. However, it causes him no pain at all; it just gives him an uneven pace. When I first saw him after the accident his muscles on that side were tight and small but after one session with the chiro you could see the blood flowing again and they had puffed out to nearly normal.

Another reason for not doing heavy work is because it would place stress on the opposite foreleg and could cause that to fail. But if you were someone who wanted a genuine guy for a gentle ride now and again, you could leave him for three months and he'd behave himself as if he was in full work.

Does that help?

There has been a lot of interest in this boy, so thought I should put his owner's details on here, so she can be contacted directly. Her name is Ute (pronounced You - ta - actually, Oo - teh, but whatever) and her number is 0407 974062.

It looks like there are many opportunities for him to find a really good home. Fingers crossed!

Sorry, to everyone interested, but it seems he has found a good new home. But if it doesn't work out for any reason, I'll get Ute to contact those of you who have expressed interest directly. Thanks for your interest.
