PostSubject: Companion/light trail riding horse for lease/option to buy   Wed Feb 09, 2011 4:01 pm

I cannot afford to keep Hugo here any longer and the only other option for me is to have him put down.

9 year old, dapple grey (going fleabitten) gelding, approx 16.1hh and very broad.
Absolute pleasure to have around, he's a real sweetie, gets on with any horse you put him with and is a complete push over to handle. Can get on him after 6 months off and he won't do a thing wrong. The sort of horse you'd put your 80 year old grand mother on.

I brought Hugo off the track in April last year, as a dressage prospect. He was going beautifully, excellent stop, go and turn buttons, has basic laterals and 3 beautiful paces to ride. Unfortunately he developed a bone spur and some arthritis in a hock, which has put him out of action since July last year.
I have spent a fortune on trying to get him rideable again, and now it's just a waiting game. If the joint fuses he should be able to go back into full work (flatwork). Vets have said it's almost definite that it WILL fuse, but it might take anywhere between 6 and 12 months.
It has been recommended that he is worked lightly 2 to 3 times a week to assist in the fusing process, hence he would be perfectly fine for some light trail riding or basic flatwork.

I'm looking for someone who would be interested in leasing him, and potentially purchasing him later down the track should they like him enough and should he be able to come into harder work. He is the sort of horse that craves attention, and I can't give that to him at the moment, or afford to keep him sitting around in the paddock.

Great to worm, float, shoe, lead, etc etc. He's just a big puppy dog!
This is a really hard call to make so please no tyre kickers, he will only go to an approved home with references as he is such a special horse to me.
Currently in paddock condition.

He's such a beautiful sweetie Kayty and you've put so much work into him. I'd take him in a heartbeat if I could afford to keep another horse Smile Best of luck finding him a lovely home.

Thanks Clare, and thank you so much for all the help in those early stages with him.
I wish I was rich and could afford to keep him, but I just can't Sad

(((Hugs))) Kayty Sad
My beautiful filly has also been diagnosed with hock spurs (she is 3yo) and I am hoping that I can do more than just light trail riding with her in time (she was supposed to be my dressage/low-level eventing star) Sad

All the best with finding you lovely man a home.

Good luck with your filly Tina, not your lovely friesian wb I hope!!
It depends on where the spurs are as to whether they affect the horse. Unfortunately Hugo has arthritis in one of his lower hock joints which is what started the spur. If the joint fuses the spur should become inactive and not bother him too much. But it's doubtful that he'll ever be able to reach very high levels of collection or jumping. If it fuses successfully though he'll hopefully be able to do lower level dressage and *maybe* some very low level jumping.

Yeah, Zyann (my Friesian WB) is my only horse now that my old TB was PTS last year (Arthritis and an eye condition) Sad
Her hock spur's are on the lowest hock joint, the vet at Lindsay Park was pretty sure it will round off in time and stop causing issues as her joints are heathy otherwise - but it will take at least 12 months. I can do light work (trail rides) with her in the meantime, just no collected or fast work.
Like your boy, she is so quiet and fun to ride, it is such a shame the good ones have to have the soundness issues Sad

Yeah my boys are in the lowest joint too - are hers due to arthritis as well or just the spurs?

No arthritis, the joint "gaps" are wide, so plenty of synovial fluid and everything, plus the edges of her bones are nice and smooth. I think becuase her ligaments are a bit stretchy at the moment, they are not holding the bones firmly in place and thats why the rubbing occoured (and therefore the spurs formed). She also has a sticky stifle too, so I have her on a tendon/ligament herbal supplement (McDowells) to try and tighten up her ligaments. She is also on weekely Pentosan (till the 4 weeks are up, then monthly), plus pure Glucosamine and MSM. I have also heard of a 'bone spur dissolving' supplement called Cal Flor (Calcium Flouride) which I am looking into at the moment too.
